Design process (Week 7)

I did some site investigation in regards to traffic jam.I took a bus from somerset to Tampines during the peak hour. From what i observed, many people are just pushing around each another just the take the bus and traffic was slow going.i feel that it was due to impatient drivers who constantly changing lane which cause the jam.I also did some investigation on the causeway.I was driving to Johor Bahru Malaysia. There was a long stretch of cars queuing up to enter Johor. Personally it was very annoying and tiring to get stuck in a traffic jam.The effect of traffic jams

-Losses of time, due to the low speed.

-Wastage of energy

-Increasing air pollution, because at low speeds higher energy consumption, and the engine is not operating at optimal conditions .

-Increasing stress road users .

-Interfere with the smooth running of emergency vehicles such as ambulances , fire department in carrying out their duties .

The government should decrease the traffic jams by:
- Increasing the capacity of the road.
One step reduces road congestion is to increase road capacity, for example: to widen the road, add a traffic lane if possible, reduce conflict at the junction turn right to limit the current.

- Alignments to public transport
To increase the carrying capacity of the road network by optimizing the efficient transport in the use of road space. For example: the development of a network of public transport services, the development of special bus lanes, such as the bus way in Jakarta,

-Restrictions on private vehicles

This policy is not popular, but if congestion is getting worse, the traffic management should be more extreme as follows:

1)Restrictions on the use of private vehicles towards a certain area will be limited traffic, another form is the application of high parking rates in the region, and the system is managed in Singapore, London and Stockholm.

2) Restrictions on ownership of private vehicles through increased cost of ownership, fuel tax, motor vehicle tax, high import duties.
3) Restriction of certain traffic entering the area or specific way with applying the 3 in 1, or any other form of motorcycle entering the toll restriction, restrictions on private cars entering the bus way lane.
